Most businesses don't upgrade their security until after something happens. A break-in, a theft that cameras didn't capture, a former employee who still has a key. Here are the warning signs that your current system has gaps.
1. Your Camera Footage Is Unusable
Pull up your most recent recorded footage. Can you read a licence plate from your parking lot camera? Can you identify a face from your entrance camera? If the answer is no, your cameras are decoration — not security. Modern 4K cameras capture detail that 2015-era 720p systems simply cannot.
2. Your System Goes Offline and Nobody Notices
If a camera dies or your NVR fills up, does someone get an alert? With older systems, the answer is usually no — you only discover the gap when you need the footage. Managed commercial systems include proactive health monitoring: if any camera goes offline, a technician is dispatched before you even know about it.
3. You Can't Check Cameras from Your Phone
If viewing your cameras requires being physically at the DVR, you're running a system from another decade. Remote access isn't a luxury — it's table stakes. You should be able to check any camera from any device, anywhere, in real-time.
4. You've Had Employee Turnover but Haven't Rekeyed
Be honest: how many former employees might still have a copy of your key? If the number is more than zero and you haven't rekeyed, you have an access control problem. Card access systems let you disable credentials instantly — no locksmith, no new keys, no wondering.
5. Your Insurance Company Is Asking Questions
Insurers are increasingly requiring documented security measures: monitored alarms, camera systems with retention policies, access logs. If your renewal paperwork is getting harder or your premiums are climbing, a security upgrade often pays for itself through reduced premiums (10-20% reductions are common).
The best time to upgrade was before the incident. The second-best time is now.
